Restore Files & Folders using Windows 98 Backup
Restoring Your Files & Folders

You can use this procedure to recover from hard disk failure, recover individual files or to transfer all your files to a new computer or hard disk.

In order to restore your files after a hard disk failure, you must have a current backup of your important data. You can then use Windows Backup to restore your files by following these instructions after you have reinstalled the Operating System and associated software.
STEP 1:
Select Backup from "Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools" This will open a Wizard screen and at this point we need to "Restore backed up files" so as to select the files or folders that we want to restore. Click OK.
STEP 2:
In the next screen we choose where to restore files from. Use the folder icon to navigate to the backup that we want to restore. In this example we are going to navigate to the floppy A drive and select a backup file is called "PC Win Test Backup". Click the NEXT button to continue.
STEP 3:
Because you may have more than one backup file/set on your media (floppy disk, zip disk etc), you are asked which backup set you wish to restore from. We are going to restore from the backup set "PC Win Test Backup" that was created on 01/05/02 at 1.27PM. Click OK to continue.
STEP 4:
If your backup spanned more than one floppy disk you will be asked to log on to the next disk. This is why it is important to know how many disks are in your backup set and the correct order in which they were made. Insert the next disk and click YES.
STEP 5:
When all disks have been logged you are asked to check the items (files or folders) that you want to restore. In example "A" by putting a tick in the box C: - [Winos] we will restore ALL files and folders in the backup set. Note that the tick is Blue, indicating that we have selected everything.
EXAMPLE "A"
EXAMPLE "B"
In example "B" we have chosen to expanded the folders beneath the C: - [Winos] by clicking on the + box and then selecting the folder "My Pictures" only. Notice that the tick in "My Pictures" is Blue, indicating that all files in that folder are selected, and the ticks in "My Documents" and "C Drive" are Grey, indicating that only some files/folders are selected.
In example "C" we have chosen to select one file only called "Shed in Field.jpg". Again the same rules apply for the colour of the ticks in the check boxes. When you have selected the files/folders to restore click NEXT.
EXAMPLE "C"
STEP 6:
Here we have the option to restore the files to their Original location or we can chose to restore them in another place. Most times we would restore them to their original location. Click NEXT to continue.
STEP 7:
In the next screen we can select whether existing files should be replaced during the restore operation. If in doubt, chose "Do not replace the file on my computer". Click START to commence the restoration.
STEP 8:
The final step is a confirmation that you are using the correct media to do your restoration. Click OK to proceed.
FINAL STEP:
At the completion of your restoration the status field will report that the restore was successful without any errors. Should there be errors click the "Report" button and any problems incurred will be clearly explained in the report.
Well that ends the restoration process and now you can relax knowing that you now have the means to protect and restore your valuable data in case of emergencies.
